Veneers are a cosmetic dentistry option for patients with teeth that are badly stained, misshapen, or crooked.
Eagle Run West Dental Group offers porcelain veneers in Omaha. Find out how the process works and if porcelain veneers are right for you.
What Are Veneers?
Veneers are thin porcelain or plastic coverings that are placed on top of your natural teeth. The veneers cover your teeth, which corrects cosmetic dentistry issues including chipped, discolored, crooked, or misshapen teeth.
Our dental team will make an impression of your teeth and send them off to a dental lab that creates custom veneers. Veneers are usually a permanent solution because, in order to apply them, we’ll need to remove a layer of enamel from your teeth. This means that if you remove a veneer, you'd need to replace it with a new one.
How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?
On average, veneers can last anywhere from ten to thirty years, but upkeep is an important component of their lifespan.
As with regular oral hygiene, it's important to brush and floss daily, avoid tobacco products and foods that discolor your teeth, and wear a mouthguard if you're playing sports.
3-Step Process to Getting Veneers:
Getting veneers requires a few separate visits to our dental office in Omaha:
- Preparation: Your first visit involves preparing your teeth for veneers, which typically takes an hour or two. During this visit, our dentist will take a mold of your teeth and prep them for veneers by buffing them down. This preparation is required to make sure the veneers will fit properly over your teeth and won't cause overcrowding. Then, the mold is sent off to the lab where your custom veneers are created.
- Final Bonding: During this appointment, your custom veneers are cemented to your teeth. Before officially bonding them, our dentist will make sure the fit and color are consistent, adjusting as needed. We'll prep your teeth by thoroughly cleaning them with a special chemical mixture. Cement is placed between your tooth and the veneer, then solidified using ultraviolet light. Once all of your veneers have been placed, you're ready to leave with your brand new smile!
- Follow-Up Appointment: After one or two weeks, you'll revisit our dental office so we can take care of any potential adjustments or concerns. Getting used to your veneers once they're put on can take some time, as the shape and feel will be different than what you're used to.
