How Does Invisalign Work?

We know it's hard to feel confident if you're dealing with a crooked smile. That’s why our dental office in Omaha, NE offers Invisalign to adults and teens that are looking to straighten their teeth.

Find out how Invisalign treatment works here.

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign uses a set of clear, custom-made aligners to straighten teeth. Made of strong plastic, Invisalign aligners are just like braces in that they actively move your teeth into the right position. However, our patients tend to prefer Invisalign to traditional braces because they’re discrete and more comfortable than having metal wires and appliances in your mouth.

Invisalign is used for a variety of dental issues, including:

  • Overbites, underbites, and crossbites

  • Gap teeth

  • Crowded teeth

  • Open bite

Invisalign is made using 3-D technology that portrays your treatment plan. Sets of clear aligners are then custom-made for your teeth for each stage of the straightening process.

Who Is a Candidate for Invisalign?

While a dependable option, Invisalign isn’t for everyone. In general, Invisalign is meant for moderate cases of crooked teeth. This means, depending on the severity of your problem, advanced orthodontic procedures may be the needed treatment option.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign is made using 3-D technology that creates your customized treatment plan. After your initial consultation, our dentist will make a series of plastic aligners. These aligners will apply pressure to your teeth, shifting them into place. While the aligners are removable, it’s important to wear them as much as possible throughout the day and night. This is the only way to ensure the results you want.

How Often Are Invisalign Aligners Worn?

Invisalign aligners are worn for about two weeks, before moving on to the next set. Your teeth should move in increments, which means each set will be straighter than your teeth are. Because of the pressure being placed, your teeth will move to fit the aligners.

In general, you’ll need to wear the aligners for about 20-22 hours a day. Our dentists will estimate how long Invisalign treatment will take during your initial consultation.

For the best results, we recommend only taking your aligners out to eat, drink, and brush and floss your teeth and cleaning your Invisalign regularly.

How Long Does Invisalign Take to Work?

It takes about one year for most adults to see results from using Invisalign. Treatment is similar to traditional braces for teens, with results taking anywhere from 18 to 24 months. That said, the length of treatment will depend on the severity of your teeth before dental intervention. You’ll also need to visit your dentist every six weeks to make sure your treatment is working as planned.

During your initial consultation, our dentists will provide an estimated length of treatment.

How Much Does Invisalign Cost?

The cost of Invisalign is determined by several factors, including:

  • The complexity of treatment - Invisalign is intended for moderate misalignment issues. While Invisalign will treat severe cases, it will require more aligners -- which may impact the cost of treatment.

  • Aftercare - Most dentists recommend wearing a retainer after Invisalign treatment, however, retainers aren’t included in Invisalign costs. The price of retainers will vary by dentist.
