How to Use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals: A Complete Guide

If you have Invisalign, chances are you already know a thing or two about keeping your aligners clean. But have you heard Invisalign has its own cleaning system?

Much like your teeth, your trays can show plaque and begin to stain. Invisalign Cleaning Crystals are made of safe ingredients that are clinically proven to prevent discoloration, staining, and odors!

Find out what it is and how to use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals here.

What Are Invisalign Cleaning Crystals?

Invisalign cleaning crystals are dissolvable crystals formulated to clean and disinfect your Invisalign aligners. Cleaning crystals remove food particles and odors while also stopping plaque from forming on Invisalign.

They’re also designed to reduce staining and discoloration from your clear aligners.

How to Use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals

Invisalign cleaning crystals come in individual packets that dissolve in warm water.  These packets are intended for everyday use — just empty the packet into a glass of water and place your aligners in the solution.

To use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals, follow the steps below:

  1. Rinse your aligners under warm running water to remove any debris.

  2. Fill a small glass or closed container with enough warm water to submerge your aligners.

  3. Empty one packet of Invisalign Cleaning Crystals into the water; stir to fully dissolve, or shake the closed container for several seconds.

  4. Place your top and bottom aligners into the mixture and let them soak for 15-30 minutes; make sure they’re fully submerged.

  5. Remove the aligners from the cleaning solution and rinse them under warm running water.

  6. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush to brush off any leftover particles or build-up.

  7. Thoroughly rinse your aligners. You can wear them immediately or place them in their case to dry.

How Often Should Invisalign Cleaning Crystals Be Used?

Invisalign Cleaning Crystals can be used as often as twice a day, but once a day is enough to keep your aligners clean. We recommend rinsing your Invisalign each time you take them out and storing your aligners when not in use.

Invisalign aligners should be treated like teeth and cleaned often, especially after eating and drinking.

Invisalign Cleaning Alternative Methods

While Invisalign Cleaning Crystals are specially designed to clean Invisalign aligners, they’re not the only cleaning method out there! That said, not all cleaning alternatives are safe — some can even damage your aligners.

With this in mind, be sure to get your dentist’s approval before using something to clean your Invisalign. Our dentists in Omaha can help determine which cleaning method is best suited for your aligners and oral health goals.

Here are some alternative methods for cleaning your Invisalign retainers:

  • Soap and water - Soak your Invisalign in a gentle, unscented soap for 20-30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly and brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

  • Hydrogen peroxide and water - Mix equal parts water and 3% hydrogen peroxide before soaking your aligners for 15-30 minutes. Rinse and brush the aligners.

  • White distilled vinegar and water - Take one part white distilled vinegar to three parts warm water and soak your aligners for 15-30 minutes. Rinse and brush the aligners.

  • Baking soda and water - Combine baking soda with a ½ cup of water and stir until mixed. Let the aligners soak for an hour before rinsing and brushing.

  • Denture cleaners - Denture cleaners, such as Polident, can also be used to clean Invisalign. Soak your top and bottom aligners for 15-30 minutes and rinse thoroughly. Brush your aligners with a soft-bristled toothbrush to remove residue.

While cleaning your aligners is crucial, remember to clean the rest of your mouth too! Brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing is just as important to your orthodontic treatment as keeping your Invisalign aligners clean.

Why Is It Important to Keep Your Invisalign Clean?

Over time, Invisalign will start to show discoloration the same way your teeth do, which is why it’s essential to clean your aligners daily. Doing so will remove plaque and food particles that end up in your aligners.

Here are few reasons you should keep your Invisalign clean:

  • Keeps your Invisalign invisible - Your Invisalign aligners need to be cleaned regularly to maintain their invisibility. Otherwise, stains may form over the trays and they’ll start to turn yellow.

  • Eliminates bad breath - Food particles can become trapped in your Invisalign, which encourages the spread of bacteria and causes bad breath. Good oral hygiene practices can help keep your aligners smelling fresh.

  • Prevents tooth decay - Tooth decay develops when food particles accumulate between the teeth and on your Invisalign aligners. This causes plaque, which can cause tooth decay or gum disease. These oral issues are not only costly to treat but may also extend your treatment duration.

How Often Do I Have to Wear My Aligners?

Invisalign treatment works by placing gentle force on your teeth, with careful timing, to improve their alignment. Each set of Invisalign aligners is designed to make slight adjustments, which is why they must be worn 20-22 hours a day. Typically, you will receive a new set of aligners every two weeks.

When you take your aligners out to eat or clean them, make sure you put them right back in. Missing large gaps of treatment time can negatively impact how long Invisalign treatment takes

What Is the Best Way to Clean Your Invisalign?

If you want to keep your aligners looking their best, Invisalign Cleaning Crystals offer a whiter, brighter smile with every use! Alternatively, you can ask your dentist for other effective cleaning methods that match your requirements.

Either way, avoid washing your aligners in hot water, which can cause bending. Also, stay away from toothpaste which can create damage, dullness, or even discoloration of Invisalign.
